What changes between 8mm and 12mm laminate?
The nominal plank thickness differs by 4mm, about 0.157 inches. Compare the complete installed build-up: plank, any attached pad, permitted separate underlayment and any other specified layers. Do not count an attached pad twice.
| Comparison | Nominal difference | Check the listing |
|---|---|---|
| 8mm vs 12mm | 4mm / 0.157 in | Confirm whether the listed thickness includes the attached pad |
| 8mm vs 10mm | 2mm / 0.079 in | Confirm whether the listed thickness includes the attached pad |
| 10mm vs 12mm | 2mm / 0.079 in | Confirm whether the listed thickness includes the attached pad |
Does thicker mean better?
Thickness is one dimension, not a complete ranking of two products. Check the documented wear classification, moisture/warranty limits, permitted subfloor and heating requirements separately. The calculator needs carton coverage; it cannot infer those specifications from thickness.
Check the finished height
Write down the complete build-up for each option and compare it with adjoining floors, door clearance and the transitions specified for the project. A 12mm plank with no pad and a differently listed plank with attached pad require a careful reading of both specifications.
Example of a separate specification
Mohawk lists its Boardwalk Collective Silver Shadow example as a 10mm plank with no attached underlayment. That is a manufacturer specification for this exact example; it does not verify every merchant color or older version in our sample.
Does thickness change the box calculation?
The pack count uses square feet per carton, not plank thickness. At the same room area and allowance, two products with different carton coverage may require different counts even when they share a thickness.
