What underlayment is best for laminate on concrete?
Start with the laminate manufacturer’s permitted layer system, then compare documented concrete applications, moisture protection and usable roll coverage. A high sound rating or a large roll does not establish that the whole installation meets the floor’s requirements.
Check four things before choosing a roll
- Record the exact flooring model, whether padding is attached, and its current installation manual.
- Have the slab checked against that manual’s moisture and flatness requirements.
- Identify the specified vapor protection, including any required separate membrane, joints and perimeter treatment.
- Check the exact underlayment for concrete and laminate applications; resolve conflicting or missing instructions before ordering.
A vapor barrier is not another cushioning pad
Do not assume attached padding supplies the moisture protection required over concrete. Write down the cushioning and vapor-protection instructions as separate items, then confirm the permitted combination.
Manufacturer example
MP Global publishes concrete and wood applications for standard QuietWalk and requires installation according to the flooring manufacturer’s instructions. This illustrates the checks to make; our saved QuietWalk LV offer is a different product and does not inherit those instructions.
Quantity example
A 14 × 12 ft room covers 168 sq ft. With a 10% example allowance, the target is 184.8 sq ft. A roll covering 100 sq ft needs two rolls. Extra membrane, tape and preparation are separate purchases.
